Active Scam In Progress? Take Action in 3 Steps:1. Hang up the call or disconnect the WhatsApp/Skype feed immediately.
2. Dial 1930 (National Cyber Emergency Helpline) to freeze recipient bank accounts.
3. File an official complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.

## How Scammers Hijack Customer Support Queries

When a courier is delayed, a flight is cancelled, or a UPI payment is pending, consumers instinctively open Google on their mobile phone and search: > *"Swiggy customer care number"*, *"SBI net banking helpline"*, *"BlueDart courier contact"*

Scammers know that distressed consumers prioritize speed over caution.

The Attack Vector: SEO & Google Maps Tampering Fraud syndicates manipulate Google in two ways: 1. **Google Maps Edit Exploitation**: Scammers use dummy accounts to "suggest an edit" to the phone number of bank branches, courier hubs, or liquor stores. 2. **Black-Hat Search Ads**: Scammers purchase Google Search Ads with titles like *"Official 24x7 SBI Toll Free Support"*, routing inbound clicks to burner mobile numbers.

The Screen-Sharing Trap (AnyDesk, TeamViewer, RustDesk) When an unsuspecting caller rings the number: 1. The fake executive answers with a practiced corporate greeting. 2. They say: *"Yes sir, your refund of ₹1,450 is stuck in the server queue. We will release it directly to your bank account right now."* 3. Under the guise of technical troubleshooting, they instruct: *"Please open the Google Play Store and download our quick support assistant: AnyDesk / TeamViewer QuickSupport / RustDesk."* 4. Once installed, the victim is asked to read out the 9-digit remote access code. 5. The scammer gains full real-time visual control of the victim's smartphone screen. 6. When the victim opens their banking or UPI app to "receive the refund", the scammer watches the secret UPI PIN being entered, takes over the session, and empties the account.

Golden Rules for Verifying Customer Support

1. **Check the Number Structure**: - Legitimate corporate customer care numbers almost always start with **1800** or **1860** (National Toll-Free). - A standard 10-digit mobile number (`+91 98xxx`, `+91 70xxx`, etc.) is **99% guaranteed to be a scammer** when claiming to be a major bank, airline, or national brand. 2. **Never Install Remote Screen Apps**: Never download **AnyDesk**, **TeamViewer QuickSupport**, or **RustDesk** at the request of anyone claiming to be a customer service representative. 3. **Use Official Apps Directly**: Always fetch contact information from the official, verified mobile application installed on your phone (e.g. inside the SBI YONO app, HDFC Mobile app, or Swiggy app), never from open Google Search snippets. 4. **Use CyberExpert's Verified Directory**: Check our [Fake Customer Care Verifier](/tools/customer-care) to look up official, verified toll-free helplines.

Frequently Asked Questions & Statutory Clarifications

Why do fake phone numbers appear at the top of Google search results?

Scammers exploit open-edit features on Google Maps business profiles, create keyword-stuffed fake blogs, or run deceptive Google Search Ads using stolen credit cards to rank above authentic customer care lines.

Can customer service agents ask you to install AnyDesk or TeamViewer?

Never. No legitimate customer care representative from any bank, courier, or telecom company will ever ask you to install screen-sharing software on your smartphone.
